In this video, is a self defense demonstration of when four attackers surround you and is based on a number of self defense routines including punching, kicking, grabbing by the opponent. The self defense component consist of blocking, block and check, kicking, punching and disabling the attacker and taking a protective stance. Many of the basic moves and self defense techniques are based on Kempo, which the students take on as an addition martial art to their Taekwondo. Many students in Danny’s Impact Taekwondo Martial Arts club are cross-discipline in other martial arts which is taught by Danny at Impact.

These videos are taken from a Black Belt grading held on the 8th of December, 2012 with my Taekwondo club, Impact Martial Arts. You will see in the videos, there is quite a dynamic range of skills displayed during this Black Belt grading, including kicking paddle work, patterns, one and three step sparing routines, self defense complexes, arnis, bo staff, sparing and board breaking. This demo went from 9:30 AM to 5 PM with about 120 participants aged from 10 to over 50.

Taekwondo is a martial art that originates from Korea. It combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise, and in some cases meditation and philosophy.

The Canberra based Impact Taekwondo and Martial Arts club follows the “Sport taekwondo”; one is practiced by WTF Taekwondo, which has a different focus from other forms of Taekwondo, especially in terms of its emphasis on speed and competition (as in Olympic sparring). Sport taekwondo is in turn subdivided into two main styles; one is practiced by WTF Taekwondo practitioners, and derives from Kukkiwon, the source of the sparring system sihap gyeorugi which is now an event at the summer Olympic Games and which is governed by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).

In Korean, tae means “to strike or break with foot”; kwon means “to strike or break with fist”; and do means “way”, “method”, or “path”. Thus, taekwondo may be loosely translated as “the way of the hand and the foot.”

Breaking boards are an essential training and demonstration tool in many martial arts. Breaking is a martial arts technique that is used in competition, demonstration and testing. Breaking is an action where a martial artist uses a striking surface to break one or more objects using the skills honed in their art form. The striking surface is usually a hand or a foot, but may also be a fingertip, toe, head, elbow, knuckle, or knee. The most common object is a piece of wood, though it is also common to break bricks or cinder blocks.

Breaking can be often seen in karate, taekwondo and pencak silat, Spetsnaz are also known for board, and brick breaking, but not all styles of martial arts place equal emphasis on, or use, breaking. In styles where striking and kicking is less important and there is an emphasis on grappling or weaponry, breaking is less prominent.

Traditional Japanese martial art schools place little, if any, emphasis on board-breaking, although the art of breaking objects was known as tameshiwari, while the similar practice of Tameshigiri or ‘test cutting’ is used in sword arts.

Breaking is based on physics and selection of materials- the most commonly seen breaking involves spaced, softwood boards. While very difficult to break even a piece of soft pine wood hitting against (perpendicular to) the grain,

breaking is almost always done with (parallel to) the grain- which requires little skill or strength. The use of spacers means instead of breaking the entire stack at once, they break one at a time- each one helps break the next as little momentum is lost and gravity is helping. Because of this, breaking is primarily used as an advertising gimmick to woo potential customers.

Tips on Board Breaking

Spend several months developing your skill before you attempt a board break. Kick hand-held pads for accuracy and the heavy bag for power.

Strike with the correct body part – the foot sword.

Build up the thickness of your breaking material slowly. Become proficient at breaking half inch pine boards before moving on to one inch or two inch thickness.

Use only people you trust, or who are experienced enough, to hold the board(s) for you. If you do not trust them, use a breaking horse.

Do not attempt to break using a technique you are not proficient with. If you cannot perform a jumping side kick against pads, you have no hope against wood.

Gym and Fitness – 3.8 – Incline Training on the Treadmill – Fitness Gym Exercise Programs

Last exercise for today, this time we are going to finish up with a block on the Treadmill. Today we are going to be mixing it up a bit. We are going to start with a walk on an incline. This is a good way of bringing the intensity up if you are not running yet or if you are running on other days. It is good to mix it up, so today we are going on an incline walk on the treadmill. Today we are going to get a good burn on our calf muscles.

When you are walking on the treadmill, always try and contract your gluts. That helps with hips stabilization but also, try not to hold onto the handles. You will try and keep up with your maximum walking speed, so pick a speed that you can do and try and not hold onto the handles.

Every treadmill varies a little bit in its speed, so I am just going to get started and adjust the speed and incline. I am going to set the incline an 8% incline. These treadmills can go up to 15% incline. Always start on the sides of the treadmill until the tread starts to move. Then jump onto the tread when it is moving. It is less wear on the motor. Then we are going to pick the speed up to a nice brisk walk. So pick a speed that you can do without having to hold on. So a speed of 6 and above, it is in kilometers, is a nice brisk walk.

Always use your arms to power on as well, and contract your gluts with your hips staying square. This will put less pressure on your lower leg joints, your knees and ankles.
